The Toyota Soarer made its debut in February 1981 as Toyota's first personal luxury car, and wowed drivers with its long nose, short deck form, an advanced inline-six engine and top of the line electronics. In June of that year the Soarer line-up was joined by the VR-Turbo grade, which utilized a two-liter inline-six SOHC turbo engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, plus four-wheel independent suspension with front strut and rear semi-trailing setups. Inside the cabin, the eye was drawn to its digital meter with a special indicator to show turbo efficiency, while luxury was guaranteed by features like the genuine leather steering wheel. The Soarer is often recognized as one of the most prominent luxury cars in the 1980s and was a pioneer of Toyota luxury cars.
