Traditional RC models have predominantly used balsa wood and plywood as these materials produce a strong, lightweight airplane that will provide many years of enjoyment.
Balsa is considered a hardwood despite its light weight. It has a grain pattern that runs down the length of the sheet. This makes it very stiff against the grain, but very flexible along the grain to easily bend into various shapes.
Plywood is generally quite stiff and heavier than balsa. It’s used in areas that need a lot of strength (when balsa just won’t do).
