They are simple and affordable, but the brushes wear over time. A brushless motor uses electronic control instead of brushes, making it more efficient, quieter and generally better suited to modern RC models.

Understanding motor specifications

• Power in watts (W): Indicates the motor’s approximate power output. A higher wattage usually means the motor can handle a larger or heavier model, but the battery, ESC and propeller must also be suitable.
• KV rating: Shows how many revolutions per minute the motor tries to make per volt without load. A high-KV motor is normally used with a smaller propeller and higher speed, while a low-KV motor is often used with a larger propeller and more torque.
• Voltage or cell count: Shows which battery voltage the motor is designed for, such as 2S, 3S or 6S LiPo.
• Maximum current: Helps you choose an ESC and battery that can safely supply enough power.
• Motor size and weight: Should match the space, weight and balance of your aircraft.
