Freewing SR-71 Blackbird Twin 70mm EDF Jet With Gyro – PNP
Born in the 1960s as a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird rewrote the record books with a combination of speed, engineering and futuristic styling that still looks like it came from another era.
Freewing captures that unmistakable shape in a 1/17 scale electric jet measuring almost 1.9 metres from nose to tail. Few models command attention at the flying field quite like this long, sleek black silhouette.
This Plug-N-Play (PNP) version arrives with twin EDF power units, thrust-reversing ESCs, retracts, servos and a pre-programmed EG01 gyro already on board. You only add your own receiver, radio and 6S battery.
Scale Detail Down to the Drag Chute
One of the highlights is the working drag chute. Assign it to a switch on your transmitter, deploy it after touchdown and enjoy a shorter roll-out together with a true Blackbird landing moment.
Like the full-size aircraft, the SR-71 uses full-flying vertical stabilisers, while elevons take care of roll and pitch. Hand-painted pilot figures, custom-moulded wheels and grey main tyres that imitate the look of the original aluminium-infused tyres complete the scale picture. An LED lighting system adds even more realism.
Three different decal sets come with the model, so you can choose your preferred markings or create a fully personal look with your own custom decals.
Twin 70mm EDF Power with Thrust Reversing
Two 70mm 12-blade ducted fans, each driven by a 2957-2210Kv inrunner motor, give the Blackbird strong thrust and a convincing turbine-like sound. Because the fans rotate in opposite directions, torque is largely cancelled out for straighter take-off runs and cleaner tracking in the air.
Two 80A ESCs with a 10A UBEC manage the power. Their thrust-reversing function helps shorten landings and gives you better control while taxiing. A 6S 5000–6000mAh LiPo with EC5 connector is all you need to get airborne.
EG01 Gyro – Stability Built In
The Freewing EG01 6-axis gyro is already installed and programmed. It smooths out the flight from take-off to landing, and with an 8-channel setup you can switch between its gyro modes from your transmitter.
Precise control comes from ball linkages on every control surface. Captured ball link control horns hold the ball centrally between two horns, so the load from each servo is spread evenly for crisp response and long-term durability. Nylon hinges are used throughout.
Rugged Landing Gear & Easy Transport
The electric retracts use CNC-machined aluminium shock-absorbing struts, which look the part and stand up well to regular flying. Main and nose gear doors are fully functional. For the best results, fly from hard, smooth runways.
Despite its length, the SR-71 is easy to take to the field. The fuselage splits in half on carbon rails with plastic reinforcement, so transport and storage are much simpler. Moulded plastic cladding protects the areas that see the most wear, and spring-loaded hatches give quick access to the battery and electronics. Assembly takes around one hour.
Caring for the Black Finish
The deep black finish looks spectacular, but it also absorbs heat. To keep it at its best, fly in moderate weather, prepare the model in the shade, limit sun exposure when you are not flying and store it in a cool, shaded place.

SR-71 Blackbird – A True Showpiece at Aerobertics
Few aircraft have a shape as recognisable as the SR-71, and this Freewing replica brings that presence to your local runway.
With twin counter-rotating 70mm EDFs, thrust reversing, a working drag chute, CNC-machined retracts and the EG01 gyro, it combines striking scale detail with modern electric jet technology.
At Aerobertics, we love models that turn every flying session into an event, and the PNP format lets you pair this Blackbird with the radio system you already trust.
Add your receiver and battery, pick your decals and take this Cold War legend to the skies.
