The F/A-18 fighter-attack aircraft, nicknamed 'Hornet,' is a supersonic third-generation jet fighter developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) for the U.S. Navy. The F/A-18 features a single-seat/tandem-seat configuration with swept wings and is powered by two turbofan engines. It is a versatile carrier-basedmulti-role fighter, the first in the U.S. military to serve both as a fighter and an attack aircraft, with excellent air-to-air, air-to-ground, and air-to-sea attack capabilities. As the most important carrier-based aircraft of the U.S. Navy, it is used for both maritime air defense and ground attack missions. The prototype first flew on June 9, 1974, and it entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1983. Following the retirement of the F-14 fighter on July 28, 2006, the F/A-18 became the sole carrier-based fighter on U.S. aircraft carriers.
